South Island Friday 17.4.15 Chch to Sydney

A NZ fantail

A Wanaka view
Our hostess, Jenny, made us a very substantial breakfast, then we cleaned up all our bits and pieces in the car and re packed our suitcases ready for the flight home. Last night's BnB was an excellent way to spend our last night in N Z. Beautiful home and garden and friendly welcoming hostess. On our way into Christchurch by 10am. A short easy drive to park near the Museum and Botanic Gardens. Made our way into the museum in order to enquire whether they were interested in a letter that Bill has describing in graphic detail the first ascent of Mt. Whitcombe, made by his Dad when he was at the University of Canterbury in 1931.
They wanted to keep the original but Bill wants to keep that so we didn't leave it with them. But what an excellent museum this one is. We spent a long time viewing their early Maori exhibit and learnt much that we hadn't known before about the skills and foresight of these people. Their bird hall is also first class. Dragged ourselves away and had a light early lunch and a stroll in the Botanic Gardens before dropping off the car and checking in for our flight to Sydney. A smooth uneventful flight and arrived at Paul and Alison' s home about 6.30 pm. Matthew very excited to see us.
We covered more than 4,000 kms in the 25 days in NZ and could easily have used more days to see things we had to skip. It is a very beautiful island with a range of scenery and with friendly helpful hospitable inhabitants and in general has a look of prosperity. The roads, in spite of the inevitable constant corners and hills, have little traffic and are in good condition. The tourist is well catered for with plenty of good food available even along more isolated roads. Our  accommodation was in Bnbs and apartments/motels about 50 50 and of a high standard. All in all, an easy destination to spend time in.
