South Island friday 3.4.15 Lake Tekapo to Mt. Cook

Our room and facilities were to quality and lovely but as there was no common sitting room there was no warm welcoming feel and contact with the owner was absolutely minimal. We also hadn't specially ordered breakfast so had to go down town. Expensive and wouldn't stay there again.
The church was open as we were leaving Tekapo but sadly no photos allowed. A great photo op. Wasted! The church is lovely though with solid oak fittings now aged and with a stone altar, windowsills etc.
Began  to get views of mountains with snow including Mt. Cook backing the tussock plains. Lake Pukaki was blue and lovely as the sun was now shining. It had become a fabulous day and perfect for viewing Mts. Cook and Sefton standing proudly at the end of the lake.
We arrived in Mt. Cook village just before lunch and after lunch walked to Kea Point. A hot walk but the clear air meant we had unobstructed views of all the magnificent scenery surrounding us. Breathtakingly gob smacking. We were amazed and disturbed to discover that the Mueller Glacier which was grinding along directly below us last time we were at Kea Pt. Has now retreated so far that it is out of sight up around the corner. The river below us is the melt from the glaciers . However the views of the surrounding mountains from the Point were truly spectacular . If you are reading this and haven't been you should go! Later we drove up the Tasman river and did another walk. Also explored the village which is now developed to a much greater degree and visited the Hermitage which has a prime position for the scenery.
Our r
Apartment at Aurora Motel was very spacious clean and comfortable and also looked directly up the valley to Mt. Cook. A good spot. We had dinner at the Backpackers Hotel. Not too bad but noisy. An early night as both very tired.
