After yet another substantial breakfast we said goodbye to Lynne and Ian at Annerley Luxury BnB and drove from Hanmer to Christchurch. Stopped at Marble Hill Winery to enjoy the view of the Waiau River and at The little town of Kaiapoi for a late morning tea. The country here on the eastern side is very dry indeed and seems to be crops(irrigated and now finished) and sheep.
First stop in Christchurch the I Site to find out about the bus tour of the earthquake damage. As it happened a tour was leaving at 1pm. So a quick dash for a bite to eat then onto the bus. What an informative tour. The damage was appalling and so extensive. Many areas are now totally cleared and will be kept as green areas as a buffer around the city. There are still many many buildings that await repairs or will be demolished when disputed claims are settled. A huge amount of rebuilding is going on. Quite a disturbing and sobering tour.
Booked into Quest Apartments, which are very near Cathedral Square and so very conveniently located. Nice spacious apartment. John rested while Bill, Julie and I then went walking. We found the container shopping centre and marvelled. It is so colourful and has become de facto City centre as the old one is no longer. Had a delicious fresh fruit ice cream. Popped along the street for a light dinner at the pub on the corner.
